Favour (divine) — Divine favour (luṭf, tawfīq) is the notion that God assists human beings by inspiring them to perform good acts and to refrain from bad ones and is the subject of a major theological doctrine propounded by the Muʿtazila and contested by their adversaries. This form of assistance is one of the two types of guidance (hudā, hidāya) with which God is believed to favour humans, the other being instruction (irshād), provided through the medium of prophetic teachings.
The Qurʾān depicts divine providence in a wide variety of ways, most notably in terms of the bestowal of sustenance (rizq, e.g., Q 2:60; 5:114) and grace (faḍl, e.g., Q 2:64; 34:10) on humans. God is described as being benevolent (laṭīf) to His creatures (e.g., Q 12:101; 22:62; 42:18); it is from this adjective that the Muʿtazila derived their term of choice, luṭf, which is said to denote, in ordinary language, kindness (rifq) and assistance (maʿūna) (ʿAbd al-Jabbār, vol. 13, 9-11). As a more narrowly defined theological term, luṭf refers specifically to the assistance by which God motivates human beings to enhance their moral and soteriological standing, as opposed to worldly aspects of divine providence. The Muʿtazila held almost unanimously that the provision of luṭf is obligatory on God, the chief exception being Bishr b. al-Muʿtamir (d. 210/825), an early member of the Baghdādī current of the school (van Ess, TG, 3, 121ff.). As an aspect of the Muʿtazilī theory of God’s justice (ʿadl), the doctrine of divine favour is secondary to the more primary tenets, that goodness and badness are real and objective properties of acts, and as such discernible to the mind, and that God is hence obliged, as a moral agent, to refrain from bad acts and to perform duties. He took on one set of providential duties as soon as He created human beings, who, as moral agents themselves, are subject to certain obligations of their own (a condition known as taklīf), and hence accountable for their acts in the hereafter and liable to suffer an eternity of punishment in hell or to be rewarded in heaven. These divine obligations towards humans, it is argued, hinge on the notion that God, as beneficent creator, wills benefit (ṣalāḥ) for human beings and so must bring about circumstances conducive to their attainment of happiness and avoidance of misery in the hereafter. His first obligation is to provide them with the means to fulfil their obligations; for instance, intellect, with which they can distinguish good and bad acts; volition, which enables them to choose freely; and the capacity (qudra) to produce their own acts (ʿAbd al-Jabbār, 11, 367ff.). A good creator, according to the Muʿtazila, does not then leave His creatures to their own devices but is obliged to provide them with two types of guidance: instructional, which takes the form of prophetic teachings, and motivational, termed luṭf. God is required to motivate humans to make the right choices, because obligations involve hardship (mashaqqa) and are hence inherently unattractive choices of action. Although agents are motivated by their knowledge of the ethical properties of acts to perform good acts and refrain from bad ones, they also come under the formidable sway of "motives of need, " which often urge them to act differently. Yet no matter the quality and quantity of any particular instance of assistance that God bestows on an individual, it can only make a certain choice of action more compelling and likely than another; it does not determine it, as that would violate the more primary Muʿtazilī principle of human free choice (ikhtiyār). All occurrences intended to motivate humans in the manner described constitute instances of divine assistance (often in the plural, alṭāf). None can be intrinsically bad; God cannot, for instance, lie in order to motivate humans to obey Him. The exact nature of the alṭāf depends, to some extent, on the recipient’s circumstances and can take the form of advantages or disadvantages, provisions or deprivations (al-Zamakhsharī, 67). Some alṭāf are created by God, including many cases of illness and other forms of suffering and hardship, which may serve as lessons or ordeals. Others are commanded by God but performed by the recipient of the assistance, the main example being acts of worship enjoined in revelation, which serve as reminders. If an instance of luṭf is followed by the agent’s performance of a good act, it can be described as «acting in accord with God’s favour» (tawfīq). If followed by refraining from a bad act, it is described as «prevention of error» (ʿiṣma). Prophets are infallible (maʿṣūm), because error is prevented in all their acts. Beyond Muʿtazilism, the belief in divine providence, including God’s day-to-day guidance and assistance to believers, is central to the popular theology of Muslims but nonetheless features as only a minor subject in formal theology. Most Sunnī theologians oppose the Muʿtazilī doctrine that God is under ethical obligations and therefore understand all forms of assistance He provides to His creatures as acts of favour, as opposed to duties. Drawing on the Qurʾān (e.g., Q 3:160; 74:31), Ashʿarīs further maintain that God also forsakes (khidhlān) some people by motivating them to commit bad acts, although this does not undermine His goodness, and that the assistance God provides does not merely affect the likelihood of the choices made by the recipients but, in fact, determines them. Some, including Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī (d. 324/936), the founder of the school, go further, defining luṭf and tawfīq as a capacity (qudra) that God creates within the agent, causing him to perform a particular act of obedience to the exclusion of any other act, and khidhlān as a capacity for a particular act of disobedience. |

| Faḍīla (1 628 слов)
(Arab., Pl. Goldziher, Muh. St. I, 51, 54 ff). .). Goldziher, ZDMG, xxxii) (1878), 344 и др .; M. Schreiner, ZDMG, XLI (1888), 593 f.). Goldziher, Muh. Брокельманн, I, 106, и S I, 166 и далее), см. Спиталер, в Documenta Islamica Inedita (Festschrift R. Hartmann), Berlin, 1952, 1-24. Irs̲h̲ād, v, 143 ff.) И т. Д. Э. фон Грунебаум, набросал (Zum Lob der Stadt in der arabischen Prosa, в Kritik und Dichtkunst, Wiesbaden 1955, 80-6), сравнительно невелик, кроме исламского Запада (см. Goldziher, Muh. St., II, 128 и далее; al-Ag̲h̲ānī 1, v, 157). 3vi, 54 и далее; al-Marzubānī, al-Muḳtabas, Ms. Nur. Osm. 3391, fol. Muḥammad al-Kindī (умер после 350/961; Brockelmann I, 155; S I, 230; ed. И tr., J. Ostrup, Copenhagen 1896). H. Ritter in Oriens, iii (1950), 82 (для Faḍāʾil-i Balk̲h̲, см. Storey, i, 1296 и далее; также Irs Ih̲ād , II, 143, 9). Irs̲h̲ād (VI, 77, 19). К. Pellat in Arabica, III (1956), ; Irs̲h̲ād, v. 66, 16 и т. Д.) И т. Д. (Ахмад бен аль-Хусайн al-Bayhaḳī, d. 458/1066, Brockelmann I, 446 f., SI, 619 и др.) из Басмалы (al-Būnī, d. 622/1225, Brockelmann I, 655 и др.), из d̲j̲ihād (Ibn S̲h̲addād, d. 632/1234, Brockelmann, SI, 550 и др.), а также «превосходства» довольно профанных вещей, которые были особенно собраны: например, бритье головы (al-Ṣaymarī, д. 275/888: Irs̲h̲ād, vi, 402 и 403), дни недели (ас-Сирафи, d. 368/979; стихотворение, Irs̲h̲ād, iii, 89, 5-11), травяной базилик (Muḥammad b Aḥmad al-Nūḳātī, d. 382/992; Irs̲h̲ād, vi, 324, 16), стрельба из лука (al-Ḳarrāb, d. 429/1037; Brockelmann, SI, 619; IC, xxxiv (1960), 195-218) и кофе (al-Ud̲j̲huri, d. 967/1559; Brockelmann II, 414, № 9). |
Faḍīla (1,628 words)
(Arab., pl. faḍāʾil ) an excellence or excellent quality, a high degree in (or of) excellence. The plural faḍāʾil indicates a definite category of literature, related to but distinct from the so-called “disputes for precedence”. Faḍāʾil literature exposes the excellences of things, individuals, groups, places, regions and such for the purpose of a laudatio . The polemical comparison or dialogue, characteristic of the “disputes for precedence”, is lacking. Faḍāʾil literature, the opposite to which is mat̲h̲ālib literature, may be divided into various branches: Ḳurʾān. Faḍāʾil literature takes its point of departure from the Ḳurʾān. The praise of the Ḳurʾān preserves, modified for the conditions of Islam, the custom of the pre-islamic Arabs to boast ( mufāk̲h̲ara ) of the nobility and exalted rank of their tribes (see Goldziher, Muh . St. i, 51, 54 ff.). A comparison of its faḍāʾil with others, despite the Arab fondness for comparison, was impossible, for the Ḳurʾān, as the direct and unadulterated word of God, was immeasurable, even in polemic against the Ahl al-Kitāb (see Goldziher, ZDMG, xxxii(1878), 344 ff.; M. Schreiner, ZDMG, xlii (1888), 593 f.). An enumeration of its excellences was furthermore to win back to the study of the incomparable holy book those Muslims who had occupied themselves all too exclusively with profane science, such as that of the mag̲h̲āzī and the amt̲h̲āl (see Goldziher, Muh. St., ii, 155; Abū ʿUbayd, K. al-Amt̲h̲āl , beginning). The nucleus of the faḍāʾil al-Ḳurʾān consists of sayings derived from the Prophet, his Companions and their descendents ( ṣaḥāba , tābiʿūn etc.) concerning the excellences of the individual suras and verses and the reward for those who occupy themselves with them. There are also accounts providing information as to when separate revelations were granted to Muḥammad. Questions of Ḳurʾānic readings are treated in special chapters. The oldest preserved K. Faḍāʾil al-Ḳurʾān is very likely that of Abū ʿUbayd (died 224/837; see Brockelmann, I, 106, and S I, 166 ff.), see Ahlwardt no. 451; A. Spitaler, in Documenta Islamica Inedita ( Festschrift R. Hartmann ), Berlin 1952, 1-24. The list in Ḥād̲j̲d̲j̲ī K̲h̲alīfa (under ʿIlm Faḍāʾil al-Ḳurʾān ) is incomplete (see Yāḳūt, Irs̲h̲ād , indexes; Ibn K̲h̲ayr, Fihrist , index; Brockelmann, index). The large collections of traditions, such as Buk̲h̲ārī’s (died 256/870) Ṣaḥīḥ (book 66), have a separate chapter on the Faḍāʾil al-Ḳurʾān . Companions of the Prophet. Among others Wahb b. Wahb (d. 200/815) had already written a K. Faḍāʾil al-Anṣār (Irs̲h̲ād, vii, 233, 7), al-S̲h̲āfiʿī (d. 204/820) a K. Faḍāʾil Ḳurays̲h̲ wa ’l-Anṣār (Irs̲h̲ād, vi, 397, 17), and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal’s (d. 241/855) K. Faḍāʾil al-Ṣaḥāba has been preserved (Brockelmann, S I, 310, 312). The 62nd chapter of Buk̲h̲ārī’s Ṣaḥīḥ contains faḍāʾil aṣḥāb al-nabī . The “excellences” of the Companions of the Prophet are for the most part concerned with the experiences which they shared with the Prophet. Historically confirmed traditions, such as that concerning Muḥammad’s hid̲j̲ra in the company of Abū Bakr, stand beside fantastic prophecies by Muḥammad about the destiny and future of his Companions, and so forth. Individuals. Al-Madāʾinī (d. 225/840) wrote a book about the faḍāʾil of Muḥammad b. al-Ḥanafiyya, D̲j̲aʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib and al-Ḥārit̲h̲ b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (Irs̲h̲ād, v, 313, 9 ff.), and al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923) one about those of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, al-ʿAbbās ¶ and ʿAlī ( Irs̲h̲ād , vi, 452, 18f,, 16). Ibn al-ʿUs̲h̲ārī’s (d. 441/1029) K. Faḍāʾil Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīḳ has been preserved (Brockelmann, S I, 601); Ibn ʿAsākir (d. 571/1176) dreamed of the faḍāʾil of Abū Bakr (for this and others of his various faḍāʾil books, see Irs̲h̲ād, v, 143 ff.), etc. A work such as that of Ibn al-D̲j̲awzī (d. 597/1200) about the faḍāʾil of Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (Brockelmann, S I, 917) belongs properly to manāḳib [q.v.] literature (see also al-Ḳifṭī, Inbāh , i, 219; Brockelmann, S III, 1228; Storey, index). Cities and provinces. Among faḍāʾil works those concerning the faḍāʾil of particular cities and provinces occupy a special place. H. Ritter ( Über die Bildersprache Niẓāmīs , Berlin 1927, 20) has already pointed out certain similarities to the genos epideiktikon. But the yield of a genuine panegyric of the city, such as G. E. von Grunebaum has sketched ( Zum Lob der Stadt in der arabischen Prosa , in Kritik und Dichtkunst , Wiesbaden 1955, 80-6), is comparatively small, apart from the Islamic West (see below). For these faḍāʾil books too consist largely of sayings put into the mouths of Muḥammad and his Companions in which political and regional aims are primarily pursued (see Goldziher, Muh . St., ii, 128 ff.; al-Ag̲h̲ānī 1, v, 157, 3vi, 54 ff.; al-Marzubānī, al-Muḳtabas , Ms. Nur. Osm. 3391, fol. 22b ff., 90b). These ḥadīt̲h̲ s may be divided into three groups: 1) Isrāʾīliyyāt , traditions about the pre-islamic period, in particular about the holy places of prophets, etc., 2) invented ḥadīt̲h̲s which originated in the rivalries between Umayyads, S̲h̲īʿīs, ʿAbbāsids etc., or between the Ḥid̲j̲āz, Syria and ʿIrāḳ, etc., 3) a few genuine ḥadīt̲h̲s able to withstand even an internal criticism (see Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Munad̲j̲d̲j̲id’s preface to his edition of al-Rabaʿī’s (d. 444/1052) K. Faḍāʾil al-S̲h̲ām wa-Dimas̲h̲ḳ , Damascus 1950). The faḍāʾil of Baṣra were collected by ʿUmar b. S̲h̲abba (d. 264/878) (Ḥād̲j̲d̲j̲ī K̲h̲alīfa), those of Kūfa by Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad (d. 283/896; Irs̲h̲ād, i, 295, 13), those of Bag̲h̲dād by al-Sarak̲h̲sī (d. 286/899; Ḥād̲j̲d̲j̲ī K̲h̲alīfa). Probably the oldest surviving work of this nature is the K. Faḍāʾil Miṣr of ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Kindī (d. after 350/961; Brockelmann I, 155; S I, 230; ed. and tr. by J. Østrup, Copenhagen 1896). For a manuscript of an early book about the Faḍāʾil al-Kūfa in the Ẓāhiriyya Library, see H. Ritter in Oriens , iii (1950), 82 (for the Faḍāʾil-i Balk̲h̲ , see Storey, i, 1296 ff.; also Irs̲h̲ād, ii, 143, 9). Quite different is al-S̲h̲aḳundī’s (d. 629/1231; Brockelmann, S I, 483) R. fī Faḍl al-Andalus (tr. E. G. Gómez according to al-Maḳḳarī, Analectes , ii, 126-50: Elogio del Islam Español , Madrid-Granada 1934, 123). This small Risāla represents indeed an encomium of Andalusia, freed of the fetters of eastern ḥadīt̲h̲ science: the praise of the power of the state (Umayyad caliphs), of knowledge (famous Andalusian scholars), of poetry, of cities such as Seville, Cordova, etc. Peoples and Tribes. Abū ʿUbayda’s (d. ca. 210/825) K. Faḍāʾil al-Furs ( Fihrist , 54, 10; Irs̲h̲ād, vii, 170, 5; Ṣubḥ al-Aʿs̲h̲ā , iv, 92, 8: read Abū ʿUbayda instead of Abū ʿUbayd; Brockelmann, S I, 167 also to be corrected thus) might owe its origin to the author’s inclinations towards the S̲h̲uʿūbīyya. For D̲j̲āḥiẓ’s K. Faḍāʾil al-Atrāk , see Ch. Pellat ( Arabica , iii (1956), 177), and F. Gabrieli (RSO, xxxii (1957), 477-483), for his K. Faḍl al-Furs , see Irs̲h̲ād (vi, 77, 19). D̲j̲āḥiẓ’s K. Faḍīlat al-kalām and Faḍīlat al-Muʿtazila (see Pellat in Arabica, iii (1956), 163 and 168) do not actually belong to the faḍāʾil literature, but rather are similar to the apologetic nature of the K. Faḍāʾil al-Imām al-S̲h̲āfiʿī by Fak̲h̲r al-Dīn al-Rāzī ¶ (d. 606/1209; see Brockelmann, S I, 921). Ibn ʿAbd Rabbih (d. 328/940) devoted a special chapter of his ʿIḳd al-Farid (vol. iii, Cairo 1372/1952, 312-418) to the faḍāʾil al-ʿArab . Ibn al-Kalbī (d. 204/819) collected the faḍāʾil of Ḳays ʿAylān (Irs̲h̲ād, vii, 251, 1), and al-S̲h̲uʿūbī (ca. 200/815) those of Kināna and Rabīʿa (Fihrist 105, 15 ff.; Irs̲h̲ād, v, 66, 16 ff.), etc. To what extent anti-S̲h̲uʿūbī tendencies play a part in these works, as seems to have been the case with Aḥmad b. Abī Ṭāhir Ṭayfur’s (d. 280/893) K. Faḍl al-ʿArab ʿala ’l-ʿAd̲j̲am (Irs̲h̲ād, i, 155, 6), has not been clarified. Various. The faḍāʾil of the holy months (Ibn Abī Dunyā, d. 281/894, Brockelmann, I, 160, S I, 247, and others) have been the subject of treatises, as have been those of prayers (Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaḳī, d. 458/1066, Brockelmann I, 446 f., S I, 619, and others), of the basmala (al-Būnī, d. 622/1225, Brockelmann I, 655, and others), of the d̲j̲ihād (Ibn S̲h̲addād, d. 632/1234, Brockelmann, S I, 550, and others), as well as the “excellences” of quite profane things which have been particularly collected: for example, shaving of the head (al-Ṣaymarī, d. 275/888: Irs̲h̲ād, vi, 402 and 403), the days of the week (al-Sīrāfī, d. 368/979; poem, Irs̲h̲ād, iii, 89, 5-11), the herb basil (Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Nūḳātī, d. 382/992; Irs̲h̲ād, vi, 324, 16), archery (al-Ḳarrāb, d. 429/1037; Brockelmann, S I, 619; IC, xxxiv (1960), 195-218) and coffee (al-Ud̲j̲hūrī, d. 967/1559; Brockelmann II, 414 no. 9). |
